The van's career began in 1977. The T 1 – still known at the time as the TN (for "Transporter New") – rolled off the production line at the Bremen plant in large quantities thanks to high demand. Colloquially, the vans of this model series were often known as the "Bremer Transporter" or "Bremer model". Until 1984, the van was produced in Bremen before production was moved to the Düsseldorf plant until 1995. In its 18-year-long production, across both production locations a total of almost one million units were delivered which meant that the T 1 was the most successful Mercedes-Benz van produced to date.
In September 1993 this van was purchased from Mercedes Benz by a fire extinguisher factory FGL in Luckenwalde located about 57 km south of Berlin. FGL specializes in converting vehicles to be suited as fire trucks.
Around mid-1994 this fire truck became part of fire truck fleets for a region called Wethautal in the east of Germany. Wethautal is a Verbandsgemeinde ("collective municipality") in the Burgenlandkreis district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is situated along the small river Wethau, a tributary of the Saale, southeast of Naumburg.
This truck was an active fire truck for Wethautal fire station from 1994 till around 2020.
